About 1984 two Cranford women were caring for their elderly parents. They were inspired to take a gerontology course at Union College to enlighten themselves and to earn certification.
When friends and acquaintances became aware of this, many approached the pair with questions seeking assistance regarding the care of their own loved ones.
Achieving certification the two women came up with the idea of forming a support group where those in need could gather to release their anxieties and share their fears and emotions with others
undergoing similar experiences. As the elderly are living longer, support of this kind is expanding greatly.
A meeting place was found at the Cranford Library and through word of mouth knowledge of its
success was spread and Caregivers of Older People came to fruition. Its reputation has grown through the decade. It is now a viable group exchanging ideas and emotions in a convivial atmosphere.
We applaud Joan Rose and Dorothy Steinback for their ideas and the social action they advanced in founding this vital community exchange.
