Elderhostel

Welcome to

Elderhostel

Elderhostel is an independent, non-profit organization offering short-term academic experiences for people over 55. What started on a shoestring at the University of New Hampshire in 1975, has blossomed into a worldwide network of dynamic programs for adult learners. Nearly a quarter-million people study and travel with us at more than 2,000 colleges, universities, museums, national parks, environmental education centers, conference centers and other educational and cultural institutions throughout the U.S. and Canada, and in 49 other countries.

Elderhostel Programs in the U.S. and Canada

During your Elderhostel program, you'll study college level courses designed especially for Elderhostel. They are challenging and thought-provoking, but don't require any prior knowledge or formal training, and you won't have to worry about homework, exams or grades. Besides daily classes, programs often include course-related field trips.

Most Elderhostels last 5 or 6 nights and start on Sunday. You'll stay in comfortable, modest facilities, and eat in campus cafeterias and dining halls.

Who Can Participate?

Elderhostel is open to people age 55 and over. Spouses of any age, and travel companions age 50+ are also welcome.

You don't need any prior academic experience to enjoy Elderhostel; whether your formal education ended with elementary school, high school or college, it you have an adventuresome spirit, Elderhostel is right for you!

Cost

In the U.S., the average tuition is $349 for a one week program. This fee covers lodgings, meals, classes and any course-related field trips or activities.

Scholarships ("hostelships") are available to those who need financial assistance; information is in the Elderhostel catalog.

International Programs

Our international programs last one to four weeks, including stays at different institutions--and sometimes different countries--each week. When you travel with Elderhostel, you learn about other lands and cultures in a way tourists never do: as a student and guest of your host country.

Airfare and all land travel overseas are included in the cost, making an Elderhostel international adventure uncomplicated and enjoyable.
