The Center for Hope was born of the compassion--and vision--of two people, one a nursing supervisor for a community hospital, the other, head of chaplain services for the same
hospital. Both felt that there was something vital missing in the health care profession's treatment of terminally ill patients--a care of the body, heart, and mind. And, when Peggy Coloney and Father Charles Hudson
took their first steps toward fulfilling that vital need, they were gratified to discover that many others believed in the work they had set out to do. It was their vision that lit the fire for others to pledge their
time and evergy to providing such care. In fact, many of the nurses and volunteers who made their commitment more than ten years ago are still at the forefront of the Center's work today. The Center recently honored its
250 volunteers and chose the Volunteer of the Year. |

From their hospital beginnings, Peggy and Father Hudson took their hospice team into the private sector. There, they believed they would have greater control and the
much needed flexibility to make their program work. And, so they grew. From rented office space in Union to the Sauer House in Roselle, donated by the family of one of its first patients, the Center has
expanded to three locations in Elizabeth, Scotch Plains, and Linden. |

A sincere faith in the rightness of what they were doing and the support of equally faithful followers have enabled the Center to evolve into much more than either
of its founders could have foreseen. The Center for Hope has become a source of comfort and hope that has changed thousands of people's lives forever. Though it has not been an easy evolution , things have
worked out. Peggy and Father Hudson will tell you. "Where one door closed, another opened. When bills appeared to be insurmountable , the funds appeared to be insurmountable, the funds came in."
Clearly, the Center for Hope was meant to be. Because it's needed and it works. |
