CLINTON TOWNSHIP - John M. Byrne, 37, died Thursday (Dec. 3, 1998) after a long battle with cancer.Born in
Summit, he had lived in the Westfield area before moving to Annandale a year and a half ago.
He graduated from Seton Hall University, School of Law, in 1986 and had his own law practice in
Westfield. He was a member of the New Jersey Bar Association.
At Westfield High School, he was a letterman in four sports. He was a co-captain and standout player on the football team.
In 1977, he was a starting cornerback for what is considered to be one of the best high school football teams in New Jersey history.
In the final game that year, his team beat Barringer High School of
Newark before 35,000 at the Meadowlands for the state championship. In 1978, he captured All-Area honors from the Courier News. He was also a key player for the baseball and basketball teams and in his only
participating year in track, he also lettered. He graduated in 1979.
In college, he became an outstanding cornerback for Lafayette College in Easton, PA. After graduating in 1983, he became an
active recruiter for Lafayette's football team.
Mr. Byrne was an active volunteer. He spearheaded the establishment of the Paul Jackson Fund to help his former high school football teammate, who was
suffering from a debilitating spinal tumor. He also did fund raising for the Valerie Fund at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Westfield and a former member
of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Union County.
Mr. Byrne was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Annandale.
His father, Thomas J. Byrne, Sr. and a sister,
Monica Ditomasso, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Jill E. Dimeck; three daughters, Grace E, Monica M, and Catherine M, all at home; his mother, Monica L. Byrne of Lawrenceville; five
brothers, Thomas J. of Flemington, Fredrick P. of Maiden, NC, Paul J. of Woodenville, Wash., Robert E. of Wyckoff, William M. of Gilroy, CA; and three sisters, Mary-Jo Armstrong of Lawrenceville, Teresa Baldwin of
Woodbury, CT, and Eileen Ruth of San Jose, CA.
Services will be at 10 AM Monday at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield followed by a Mass at 11 AM at St. Helen's Roman Catholic Church
in Westfield. Visitation is from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home.
