In New Jersey, a state stereotyped for turnpikes and malls, the Union County town of Westfield is a revelation. Its downtown has art galleries, book and music stores, flower shops, coffee shops, a movie theater and almost 40 places to eat, including Kotubuki, a Japanese restaurant; and Ferraro's for Italian.

Among some of the Cultural amenities are the Westfield Community Players who have been providing plays since 1934 and The Westfield Symphony, founded in 1983 by a group of Westfield Citizens who wanted to distinguish the area with its own professional orchestra.

In keeping with the town's spirit of volunteerism, orchestra players provide master classes for high school music students.

This idyllic town, where Mary Pickford movies were once filmed, is also home to summer concerts in the park, winter ice-skating, a classic New England village green, and a children's fife-and-drum corp.
